Bareroot trees are starting to arrive in local stores and nurseries. late January and February are a great time of year to get bareroot trees into the ground, as well as rhubarb and cane berries. All these additions to the garden like to be 'mudded in,' and exception to the overly wet soil rule. Planting during the rainy months allows the majority of the growth to occur at the root level instead of instantly producing buds and flowers which takes nutrients and energy away from the roots. Thank you to Kendra Pearce of Urban Farm School for this information.

Congratulations to Lisa Schmidt of Ridgefield who has been elected to chair the Clark County Waste Commission.

Three Brothers Vineyard and Winery won several awards for their wines at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition against more than 5,000 wines being submitted from 23 states. Our local wine scene is alive and well in the Ridgefield area - visit one of them soon.

Art 'Ossie' Osmundson, the longtime baseball coach at Ridgefield High School, has retired from coaching. He's coached 33 baseball seasons, including the 2002 team that won the state championship. for 25 years he coached football, including 16 as head coach. He still intends to teach for a few more years, but his coaching career is over. He'll take his three grandchildren to Ridgefield games as a grandpa, not a coach. "Coaching has just been a great way to stay involved in sports. It worked out pretty good," said Coach Osmundson.
