When Tom Golik bought Woodland Coast to Coast Store from Walt Wood in 1977 the local newspaper read "Friendly people please new owner." Tom was quoted as saying "Our goal is to offer friendly, helpful, individual service and carry complete lines of quality merchandise." This business philosophy holds true today, 26 years later.

Click to enlargeThe Golik family, Tom, wife Lois and son Mike, moved from Springfield, Oregon when they acquired Coast to Coast now known as True Value. Tom had been employed at the corporate level by Coast to Coast for several years and brought with him a broad background in hardware. His transition was eased by the Woodland employees, many of whom are still with the firm. The current store has been a stabilizing influence in the downtown area for the last quarter century providing quality customer service, community involvement and knowledgeable staff.

After graduation from college, Tom's son, Mike, entered the business. Together, father and son provide the individualized service which represents the firm. In a time when customers are expected to wait on themselves, assemble their own purchases or try to figure out directions, Tom, Mike and staff take the time to do this for their customers. One mechanically challenged patron told of buying a weed eater which came in a box unassembled. To Tom it was "no problem." When she picked it up it was ready to go, tested, strings loaded, gas and oil in the machine and no extra charge. It is the kind of service and attention no longer available except to customers in towns like Woodland.

Tom has been a member of the Woodland Chamber since his arrival and has been joined by son, Mike in supporting the business community. Tom served as Chamber president in 1985, served on several committees, was active in establishing the Woodland Information Center and currently is chairman of the Woodland Revitalization Committee, a project that has claimed his attention for 26 years. Tom and Mike can always be counted on for a donation to a local fund raiser, participation in Planters Days and ongoing support for the betterment of the community.

True Value is a model of what a small hometown business should be. Their commitment to service should assure that this valuable business asset will feature in Woodland's future. Golik's True Value store proves there is no better reason to shop locally.
